Mathew has always surrounded himself with performing arts. Growing up in Newcastle, he performed with a variety of theatre companies throughout the Hunter. At seventeen years of age, he played Doug in Tantrum Theatre’s Cosi (directed by Leticia Caceres), an experience that cemented his passion for a career in the industry. Mathew subsequently worked extensively with the Newcastle-based Stooged Theatre; performing in three productions, directing five productions and holding the position of Marketing Manager and Treasurer since the company’s incorporation. Upon acceptance to Actors Centre Australia, Mathew made the move to Sydney, performing in devised works Cartography (directed by Anthony Skuse and Sam Chester) and In Times of War / Gold (directed by Jennifer West and Sam Chester). Also with ACA, he played Dobchinski in The Government Inspector (directed by George Ogilvie), Leonato in Much Ado About Nothing (directed by Adam Cook), in verbatim piece Mind the Gap (directed by Dean Carey) and most recently, as Mitch in A Streetcar Named Desire and Tom Junior in Sweet Bird of Youth (both directed by Gale Edwards). Mathew holds a Bachelor of Communication (majoring in Journalism and Media Studies) and works for the Arts Health Institute, bringing performance and creativity to people with dementia.
